'LIFE after 65' will be the theme of a special festival for older people in Milford Haven on Saturday, May 9.

The Pioneering People Festival for Seniors will be a chance to learn more about the opportunities available to older people.

Festival organiser Sheila Jones, 78, said life expectancy had risen by almost 20 years, and as communities aged it was vital to give older people more of a voice.

“When I was young, people who were 80 were just so old, but now we think the same about people who are over 100,” said Sheila.

As well as a way to find out about local groups, clubs, and volunteering opportunities, the day will also be a chance for people to get together, share experiences, and make friends.

Sarah Rochira, the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, will also be speaking about her role in ensuring older people have access to opportunities, and are valued.

“Often, living with things such as increasing weakness bring fear, as we feel like we have no way of dealing with them,” said Sheila.

“I hope this event will be an enjoyable day where local people can meet and chat with others, share and expand our ideas and recognise we all have similar problems, but we don’t have to face them alone.”

The current deputy mayor of Milford Haven, Cllr Stephen Joseph, will open the morning, and local choir the Nantucket Wailers will also give their first performance.

There will also be information on coping with illness, bereavement, and finding spiritual solace, for those who are interested.

The event, at the Pill Social Centre, starts at 10.30am and runs until 3pm. Admission is free, and a buffet lunch and refreshments will also be provided.
