PEMBROKE is gearing up for this afternoon’s annual RFC Summer Carnival.

Having celebrated its silver anniversary last year, the 26th annual carnival starts at 1pm today (July 11) at The Commons, where the floats and walkers assemble for the parade, led by the Fishguard 948 Squadron ATC band, to the Lamphey club grounds.

Adding to the party mood as the parade marches through Main Street, cheered by the crowds, is the Vibe School of Dance, and colourful mascots.

The carnival, which regularly attracts 1,000 visitors, makes its way to the main event, at the Crickmarren Field grounds on Upper Lamphey Road, There’s plenty to entertain everyone at the grounds, with stalls, a raffle, a bouncy castle, slide shows, rides and refreshments, and even a car boot sale, with pitches available on the day at £5 each.

To keep the carnival party mood going at the event, which runs to 5pm, there’s music from local DJ Steve Briars.

There’s also a new event, a five-a-side football competition taking place.

The competition has received the backing of the town council.

At their June meeting, councillors agreed to fund an annual Mayor’s Cup for the carnival.

Speaking at the meeting, Councillor Keith Nicholas said it was hoped to stage a community-based five-a-side football game during the carnival.

“It would be nice if we, as a town council, had a mayor’s cup,” said Cllr Nicholas, adding: “I’m asking the town council to spend £40 on a cup which can be used every year.”

Mayor Paul Pauline Waters hoped the council was prepared to pay a little extra for “something nice.”

Members agreed to fund the cost of a mayoral cup.

There’s plenty for fans of man’s best friend too; with both dog racing and a best-dressed dog competition.

Speaking about the carnival, Cllr Nicholas said: “It’s supported well by the locals, without question, and visitors to the town follow on, it’s a great local get-together, a real community event.”
