CHILDREN at Coastlands CP School have been congratulated for their work on sustainability issues by the MP for Preseli Pembrokeshire and Secretary of State for Wales, Stephen Crabb.

Mr Crabb came to a special assembly on Friday where he presented the pupils with a Gold Sustainable Schools award, and learnt all about the work they had done.

His visit included a tour of the school and its grounds to see sustainability in practice.

Mr Crabb was impressed with pupils’ success in saving energy and told them about how they were trying to save energy in Westminster.

Pupils also had the chance to question him about his job and the environment.

Headteacher Jeremy Evans praised the pupils for their work, adding: “The contribution of volunteers and in particular Kate Lock and Sue Burton to this area has been enormous.”

The award itself is made from Pembrokeshire-grown oak and is now proudly displayed at the school.

Coastlands CP School is one of 18 schools in the county to have received the Gold award.

The Sustainable Schools Award scheme is run by Pembrokeshire County Council. It acknowledges pupils’ work and understanding of sustainability throughout the school.

The award covers seven topics; energy, transport, community citizenship, biodiversity, water, waste, health and global citizenship. It is split into three stages, Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Schools demonstrate how they include sustainability in the curriculum, in their ethos and in the running of the school.
