DISAPPOINTMENT at the ‘intolerant’ tone of the pro-Leave campaign has prompted one Milford Haven trader to come out in vocal support of remaining in the EU.

Lorraine Turner, who runs The Window, in Charles Street, has even been offering a 50 per cent discount to customers who will be voting to stay in European Union today.

Mrs Turner said it was clear that the current situation in the UK and EU was not ideal, but feels leaving the EU will not solve the problem.

“The government elected to run things efficiently and economically seems to be running things into the ground,” she said.

“Here in Milford Haven – an absolutely stunning town – we are told we cannot afford to repair a well-used bus shelter, or fix the town clock.

“Where has all the money gone?

“The offer of an EU referendum has swiftly shifted the blame from those in control to a perceived immigrant invasion.

“Mass xenophobia has been exploited by the far right, and the ‘back off, Brussels’ brigade has wasted no time in flooding social media with questionable facts and statistics.

“Integrity seems to have disappeared entirely from political debate; bigotry and ignorance have been given free reign, to the extent that a promising rising star has been killed.

“No-one condones the extreme hatred that led to that attack, but it is surely the ongoing, low-level intolerance of foreigners, immigrants, and refugees that is more sinister.

“There is an unkindness developing in this country, and also an attitude that we can do better on our own.

“The reality is that once outside the EU, we will be very much outside of Europe, and that is going to be a big deal.

“Our tiny island will become insignificant, and no longer have influence in world matters, including trade.

“This will only become clear after the decision to leave the EU has been made, by which time it will be too late.

“The Brexiters – like all bullies – seem to have been the most vocal, but let’s hope there are sufficient deeper-thinking and well-informed people voting to keep us in an institution that continues to offer so many benefits and positive international relationships.”
