AN ALCOHOLIC asked how long his jail sentence would be if he carried out a suicide bombing.

Nurul Uddin, 33, of Lower Robert Street, Milford Haven, said he would blow up or set fire to The Lord Kitchener pub in Milford Haven during a drunken phone call to probation officer Michelle Lester.

He admitted making a threat to damage or destroy the town centre bar during an appearance before Llanelli Magistrates Court on July 9, and yesterday (Wednesday) came before Haverfordwest Magistrates Court to be sentenced.

Prosecutor Sian Vaughan said while speaking to Ms Lester, Uddin, who has previous convictions for making threats, "shouted and swore" and referred to an incident that had taken place at The Lord Kitchener the previous day.

"He said he'd been watching a football match and had been cheering for the unpopular side.

"Other people in the pub had reacted badly, this had upset him and he said he intended to bomb the place," Ms Vaughan explained.

"He said it would be a suicide bombing and he asked Ms Lester what sort of jail sentence he'd get for that.

"He then asked how long he would get for arson. He said he was going to buy petrol or some Sambuca because it catches fire easily. He also said 'don't come looking for me after I've done it'."

Jonathan Webb, defending, said Uddin was currently subject to a community order for an unrelated offence and "hadn't been in the correct frame of mind" when he made the phone call at around 4.45pm on July 7.

"He had consumed a large amount of spirits the previous day when he'd watched Wales v Portugal, and had cheered on Portugal," the solicitor said. "He went home, and continued drinking. The next day he woke up, and drank more until he made this rather stupid phone call. Drink simply got the better of him.”

Probation officer Julie Norman said Uddin was “alcohol dependant”.

“He’s seeing a Dyfed Drug and Alcohol Service (DDAS) worker to address his alcoholism,” Mrs Norman told the court.

“When he made the threats, he’d been drinking all day and had also taken cannabis and anti-depressant medication. He claims he didn’t mean what he said, but obviously we had to take the threats seriously and inform the Police.”

Magistrates revoked Uddin’s existing community order, and re-sentenced him to a new 18 month order including 25 days of rehabilitation activity and continued contact with DDAS.

They also imposed an 18 month exclusion order banning him from The Lord Kitchener, and for the next three months he will be electronically tagged to remain at home between 6pm and 7am. Uddin must also pay £170 court costs.
