A SKATEBOARDING accident has left a teenager fighting for her life.

Georgia Fairthorne, 19, was visiting her family in Nolton Haven and on Friday, her skateboard hit a rock, causing her to fall and hit her head on the ground, leading her to have a fit.

Her mum, Emma, said that her daughter was not wearing a helmet at the time.

She was rushed to Withybush Hospital, where doctors discovered that Georgia had suffered two different types of bleed on the brain as a result of the freak accident and made the decision to put her into an induced coma and transfer her to the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.

Mum, Emma, said: “The paramedics told us that at the time, they thought it was concussion.

“When we got to the hospital, she going in and out of consciousness.

“She said to me: ‘Oh mum it hurts’ and ‘I don’t want to go.’ I said to her: ‘Don’t worry, baby. I will hold your hand the whole time.’ Then they sedated and intubated her.”

“I have reached the stage where I am no longer hoping for her to live, I am hoping for the best possible outcome.

“This is a head injury and this means that we are going to have a new Georgia and we have to make the best of it.

“The surgeons have prepared us for the worst which is the fact that she might die.

“But at the moment, she is stable. Her body is going through the healing process.”

She said that Georgia has given her some hope by squeezing the hands of her mum and friends, but it is still early days.

Emma said that whatever the outcome, she hopes to start a campaign to ensure that people always wear a helmet when riding a skateboard, for which she will be looking to get sponsorship.

She is also considering lobbying Parliament about making it into a law.

Emma has set up a blog on Facebook called Georgia On My Mind using #DontBeVainProtectYourBrain and #4Geeb, a reference to her daughter’s nickname to help keep friends, family and well-wishers updated.

Georgia and her family are originally from Bournemouth, however Georgia decided to stay on the south coast after her family, including her siblings, Hermione, Merlin, Reuben and Tabetha, moved to Pembrokeshire.

A Go Fund Me page was set up to help the family with costs. Emma said: "I would like to raise £250 to make the next few days easier. Petrol, a room so we can take it in turns to sleep and hold G's hand, refreshments, parking fees, train fare etc for the family and friends running back and forth to Cardiff from Pembrokeshire and Bournemouth."

The current total on the Go Fund Me page stands at nearly £1500.
