YEARS of study into how the First World War affected the lives of ordinary families in Pembrokeshire have paid off for one councillor.

Mayor Cllr Simon Hancock, who serves on both the town and county council, recently graduated from Cardiff University with a PhD in Modern Welsh History.

He was awarded the doctorate for his 106,000 word thesis entitled 'The Social Impact of the First World War in Pembrokeshire'.

Cllr Hancock started his course in July 2009 as a part-time student, juggling his studies with a busy work life.

He said he was very proud that his research had made "an original contribution to the history of the county into an area that has hardly been researched before".
