HUNDREDS of hours of hard work by volunteers have helped transform a 'drab' school playground into a world of colour and adventure.

The Meads School in Milford Haven has been given a vibrant makeover, thanks to staff from local Tesco branches.

More than £300 of paint, and 300 hours of brush work, have seen the yard's plain walls brought to life with jungle creatures, 'under the sea' animals, and a variety of weird and wacky aliens.

Designed by Tricia Boyle and her daughter Ashley, the characters were painted by staff from Tesco in Milford Haven, Haverfordwest and Pembroke, and volunteers from PRP Training.

Work started in Easter, and the finishing touches have just been completed in time for children to go back to school.

As an extra treat, the team has also created a new welcome artwork on the front of the main school building.

"When we started it looked so drab, and we wanted it to be a fun place for the children," said Tesco community champion Debbie Mills.

"To see their faces when they've seen what we've done is amazing."

She added: "Being retailers not artists I think we have done quite well!"

Money for the project was raised by Tesco staff, who also donated £1,000 to new play equipment at the school.
