A FILM written and produced by children from Cleddau Reach school has had its Pembrokeshire premiere.

Pupils, parents, and members of the community gathered at the school hall in Llangwm last week to attend the first showing of ‘The Flight of The Drone’ – created by children in the school’s film club.

The film is a modern tribute to the classic Oscar award winning 1956 French short film ‘The Red Balloon’ which follows the adventures of a young boy who discovers a helium-filled red balloon.

Pupils watched the original film, and realising this year would be the 60th anniversary of its release, decided to have a go at creating their own version of it with a modern twist, replacing the red balloon with a flying drone!

The school’s film club was started in 2013.

As well as watching and reviewing films, pupils are introduced to film making, getting involved in everything from scripting to camera work, sound engineering and acting.

Last year it was one of just three UK clubs nominated for the Into Film club of the year award.

The previous year, their film ‘A Sense of Place’ was overall winner of the Into Film Dylan Thomas 100 Competition for Wales.

Speaking at the premiere, headteacher Nick Groves said: “Film club is hugely popular with the pupils and there is no doubt they benefit enormously from participating in it, improving not just their literacy and IT skills, but also building confidence in speaking, creative expression, and of course learning film-making skills.

"The children enjoyed filming at different locations within the village of Llangwm.

"I am really proud of the effort they put into scripting and producing such a marvellous film.”

The Flight of the Drone will now be entered into a number of local, regional, and national film competitions.
