A RESCUE centre that helps find new homes for abandoned animals has thanked local people, after its Milford Haven shop was struck by vandals.

Volunteers at Green Acres Animal Rescue furniture store, in Charles Street, were horrified to find their front window smashed when they opened up on Tuesday morning.

It is thought the incident happened between 5am and 6.30am.

The damage is estimated at around £100, but thankfully the organisation has already received offers of help to meet this cost.

The incident has raised concerns about CCTV coverage in the area, which was not working at the time.

Georgie Pearson, of Green Acres, said she was told by police that the camera was out of action several weeks ago, following an incident at its other store in the street.

"It's there for a purpose, and if it's not working it's not fit for purpose," she said.

"If anyone comes in and hassles the volunteers when they're on their own, we tell them to get outside so the cameras can catch it, but if the cameras don't work it's a pointless exercise.

"Where they're positioned in Charles Street is for a reason, and they serve a good purpose, so they should be working - especially down this end of the road as there's a high concentration of pubs and clubs."

A spokesman for Pembrokeshire County Council, which owns the camera, said: "The CCTV camera in question was attended to on September 19, after a fault was reported to us.

"We were unaware that it had broken since that date until we were notified by a representative of Milford Haven Business Circle earlier this week.

"We have since attended and the camera is now recording images but further works are also required, which will be carried out as soon as possible."
