South Wales Women’s Hockey League:
Gwernyfed 1
Milford Haven 6

MILFORD Ladies hockey team travelled to Brecon for their final game of the season on Saturday against Gwernyfed.

Both sides started brightly, as this was a must win game for the home side to avoid relegation.

But the first goal went to Milford when some good interplay between the midfield released Rachel Coe down the right who cut in and finished well inside the D.

The home side hit back immediately with a goal after a lapse in concentration by the Milford defence.

However, Milford regained control and took the lead again midway through the half, Charlotte Davies had her initial strike saved but Player of the Match Meg Jones was first to react to the rebound.

Momentum was now with the visitors and a further two goals, another one each for Coe and Jones were added before half time.

The second half the visitors again dominated possession and after good build up play down the right and a well-timed cross, youngster Kasey Arran guided home a well-deserved goal.

As the tempo decreased due to the heat the home side looked to press but another solid defensive display by Milford ensured Gwernyfed had few opportunities - and at the other end Rachel Coe completed her hat-trick with a skilful finish late on.

Milford therefore secured three points and a creditable fourth placed finish.

Skipper Emma Summons said:  “It was a great performance by the whole squad especially in the heat, and I’m satisfied with the way the team have played this year - with a bit more luck and determination we could have been pushing for promotion.

“We will enjoy the summer break before the pre-season starts again in August, and I would also like to thank all our supporters and sponsors throughout the season, the contributions are much appreciated”.

Milford Haven squad: Emma Summons (captain), Yasmin Riggs, Vicki John, Meg Evans, Kate Farr, Jane Jordan, Charlotte Davies, Sian Davies, Kate Barnard, Georgia Davies, Rachel Coe, Meg Jones, Kasey Arran, Steph Layton.
