AN ATHLETIC club with more than 300 local members has received a funding boost from Valero Pembroke Refinery.

Pembrokeshire Harriers, the county's only athletics club, has been given £200 to help replace their hammer and discus throwing cage.

With members aged between 9 and 75, across a range of ages, skills and abilities, the club takes part in various track and field, cross country and road running events, including disability disciplines.

The club has been fundraising to repair and replace a number of pieces of equipment, with a new cage for hammer and discus training much needed, with great strides being made towards their target following a donation from Valero.

Peter Freeman, Pembrokeshire Harriers committee member, said: “As with any club we are very reliant on generous support from volunteers and donations from individuals and local businesses.

"We are very grateful to Valero for their kind contribution and look forward to great success for our track and field athletes with our new equipment.”

Stephen Thornton, Valero Refinery public affairs manager, said: “Clubs like Pembrokeshire Harriers play an important part in developing the sporting abilities of people, especially young talent, here in Pembrokeshire.

"Valero is proud to be a huge supporter of local sport in our county and to help clubs and teams that do so much to keep people healthy and active."
