A MILFORD Haven-based project that provides young people with a choice of different vocational experiences and the chance to gain qualifications has celebrated its first 12 months.

‘Routes to Opportunity’ has helped more than 160 young people, with 76 gaining a qualification.

Participants have a choice of various work experience, including catering, woodwork, gardening, and leisure.

The project is co-facilitated between Pembrokeshire Youth Service and Milford Youth Matters and funded by the National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund.

To celebrate its first year, a presentation evening was held recognising the achievements of a number of young people who have successfully completed the eight-week programme, gaining an accredited qualification in a range of areas including customer services, woodwork and cycle maintenance.

The project also aims to develop individual self-efficacy so that participants not only have the ability to go on to enter the labour market, but also become active members of their community.

Nick Hudd, deputy manager of the Community Youth Team, said: “As with many of the projects both Pembrokeshire Youth Services and Milford Youth Matters run, emphasis is placed on working with local businesses, organisations and other training providers to ensure young people benefit from the vast range of experience and knowledge available to them locally.”
