POLICE are investigating an industrial accident at the former Murco refinery site in Milford Haven.

A man was taken to hospital with serious injuries following the incident, which happened shortly after 9am this morning (Wednesday, May 31).

We understand the worker became trapped while assisting with the dismantling of the site.

A police spokesman said: "Dyfed-Powys Police, jointly with Health and Safety Executive, is investigating an industrial accident at Puma Energy, Milford Haven.

"The accident involved one man, who was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"No further information is available at this time."

An ambulance spokesman said: "We were called at 9.15am to reports of an industrial accident at Puma Energy, Milford Haven.

"We sent a paramedic in a rapid response car and a crew in an emergency ambulance and a man was taken to Withybush General Hospital."

Tony Fenwick, managing director of Waste Recycling and Decommissioning Ltd (WRD), said workers were stood down following the incident, but are expected to return to work tomorrow.

He told the Mercury: "A subcontractor to WRD Ltd, contracted to dismantle the former refinery, was involved in an incident during the morning of May 31.

"The injured person is receiving hospital treatment.

"An investigation is currently being carried out.

"There was no evacuation of the site and no effect to the surrounding residents."

A spokesman for Puma Energy said: "This morning’s incident was not on a working site under Puma Energy’s control, but was in the dismantling of the former refinery area within Milford Haven, which Puma Energy did not purchase.

"This is segregated from Puma Energy’s site by a fenced boundary and operates under its own safe systems of work.

"Puma Energy takes the safety of its neighbours very seriously and are offering assistance."
