A MAN convicted of a sexual offence while in South Korea last year will have to sign the sex offenders register having been “caught up in rare legislation”.

An application was made by Dyfed-Powys Police’s chief constable in relation to William Jack Styles, 33.

He had been sentenced to four months in prison after grouping a woman’s thigh and crotch while he was drunk on a bus in South Korea.

He was deported before serving his sentence in March 2016 and Interpol notified Dyfed-Powys Police of his offence.

His addresses cannot be published due to legal restrictions.

Solicitor for the chief constable, Okechukwu Adieze and defence solicitor Jonathan Webb argued that he could be at risk if people knew where he lived, citing the recent “mob justice” in Monkton.

Styles did not remain in the dock for the hearing due to his highly emotional state. He was crying and covering his face with the hood of a large woollen coat. Concerns about his mental health were raised.

Magistrates approved the application and Styles will remain on the sex offenders register until 2023. An application for court costs was refused.
