TWO Milford Haven churchs turned purple this week, in support of a campaign to end polio.

On Tuesday, St Katharine and St Peter’s Church was lit up in purple as part of the Purple4Polio project.

The initiative was taken by Milford Haven Rotary Club, and was supported by Fr Harri Williams and by the Mayor Colin Sharp.

At the other end of town, St Cewydd and St Peters Church in Steynton also sported a violet glow.

Rotary and its partners launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative nearly 30 years ago.

Since then, the incidence of polio has plummeted by more than 99.99 per cent, from about 350,000 cases a year in 125 countries to just 37 cases in three remaining polio-endemic countries, Afghanistan,

Pakistan and Nigeria.

Milford Haven Rotary club has played its part in supporting the initiatives to end polio, contributing around £700 each year from members donations, and from fundraising events.
