LOCAL drivers have reported a group of men, one without any shoes on, trying to flag down cars on a dark road near Milford Haven on Tuesday morning.

The men, described as in their late 20s to mid-30s, were stood in the road waving their arms, as if trying to get people to stop.

At least two incidents were reported between 4.30am and 4.35am, on the main road from Herbrandston into Milford Haven.

One of the men was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, but was later released.

Kay Thomas was driving her husband to work for an early shift at around 4.30am on Tuesday.

As she came over the brow of the hill, she saw something in the middle of the road.

"I had my lights on full beam, and I thought I could see something in the middle of the road.

"I asked 'what the hell is that?' - it was surreal.

"They were just waving their hands, one had no shoes on!

"I assumed they had crashed their car so I slowed right down but then I remembered a similar thing happening to someone last year, so my husband said not to stop.

"I just locked the doors and drove through them."

The pair called the police as soon as they reached their destination.

Kay then had to travel back on the road to go home.

"I thought about going a different way but I didn’t have much petrol in the car," she said.

"When I came back, there was a car on the side of the road and it looked like the men were trying to get in the back.

"Then a police car turned up and spoke to them, so I left."

"It was quite frightening," Kay told our reporter.

"They're not scared about jumping out into the road, it’s not like they're in the verge or anything.

"At that time of night the road is usually empty, you barely see another car.

"It's just so dangerous. I won't be driving that road again after this."

Just a short time after, another driver had a similar experience.

Mark Ryan from Milford Haven was also on his way to work at around 4.45am when he was confronted by the men, who tried to get him to pull over.

At around 5am, a woman living near Milford Golf Club also phoned police after three men started banging on her front door.

It is understood officers arrived around 25 minutes later, and spoke to the men.

A police spokesman said: “Three men were involved in a single-vehicle road traffic collision on the Esso road, and appear to have made attempts to flag down passers-by for help.

“One man was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol, and has since been released with no further action against him.

“Reassurance patrols have been carried out in the area and nothing suspicious has been found.”
