DO YOU have a teapot and a few hours to spare? Then you could help brighten someone's day by helping Contact the Elderly.

The charity is looking for volunteer hosts and drivers to help older people get out and about, meet new people, and stay social.

Contact the Elderly holds monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for over-75s, many of whom miss the company and warm welcome of a family home.

For the past 50 plus years, the charity has been arranging for older people who live alone to be driven to the homes of volunteer hosts in order to enjoy a few hours around a tea table in a family atmosphere.

All you need to be a host is a warm heart, a teapot, a reasonable-sized table, no steps up to your front door and a downstairs loo for people with mobility problems.

To become a volunteer driver, you will need a full driver's licence, a valid insurance and access to a car.

You will collect the same older guest/s each month and take them to a different local host's home where you and the older guests all enjoy an afternoon tea party.

"It's such a simple concept, said Trevor Lyttleton, who three years ago was awarded MBE for his charity work.

"The most poignant response we ever had was a letter from a lady who said, 'With your tea parties, I’ve got something to live for.'

"That’s the kind of thing that spurs us on."

Gwen, 89, has health problems which can sometimes prevent her from getting out and about, but revealed the charity had brightened up her life since joining a few years ago.

She said: “It’s wonderful having people to speak to, I don’t think anyone really wants to be alone. I don’t have any plans for Christmas Day, so this is my outing and I have really enjoyed it.”

Anne, 88-year-old, said: “You’re never too old to meet new people, and everyone I have met through this has been so nice.”
