The Port of Milford Haven and Valero refinery in Pembroke were among the winners at Friday's prestigious Arts & Business Cymru Awards.

The annual awards ceremony - celebrating its 25th year - took place at Wales Millennium Centre.

The Port and Cardiff Harbour Authority took home the Arts, Business & the Environment Award for their joint sponsorship of a play that raised awareness of the dangers of swimming and ‘tombstoning’ (jumping or diving from a height into water) in busy maritime areas of Milford Haven and Cardiff Bay.

Would you Jump? was seen by more than 1,000 people and both businesses reported a decrease in anti-social behaviour during summer 2017.

The project was so successful in promoting a key water safety message that the sponsors have increased their investment in 2018.

Meanwhile, Valero took home the award for Arts, Business and Young People.

Focused on enhancing the lives and futures of young people in Pembrokeshire, Valero sponsored the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama (RWCMD) to establish a drama training project in 2013.

The West Wales Young Actors Studio addresses the lack of local specialist drama opportunities and the business’ support provides bursaries for financially-disadvantaged students.

In the past year, the number of teenagers engaged in training and outreach workshops has grown with some of the participants going on to pursue drama at the UK’s most prestigious conservatoires.

Its sponsorship continues and will be extended this year as the RWCMD delivers workshops on confidence-building for female staff at Valero’s Pembrokeshire refinery.

The judges called the ongoing partnership “a brilliant project that effectively opens doors for young people”.

The event categories, which recognise the best partnerships between businesses and arts organisations, were sponsored by a range of Welsh firms, with Valero also being the principal sponsor.

Rachel Jones, chief executive of Arts & Business (A&B) Cymru, said: “A&B Cymru believes passionately in the arts’ unique capacity to unite communities and improve lives. We have witnessed the positive impact that partnerships between arts organisations and businesses can have, not only for each other but the communities in which they operate and the wider Welsh economy.

"It is an honour to celebrate so many excellent companies and arts organisations working together across Wales in innovative, and often humbling, ways.

“I’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to the sponsors and partners for their continued support of our work and these awards. We simply couldn’t do it without your vision and commitment.”
