Fishguard gets funky today (Thursday) as the Aberjazz festival returns in full flow.

This year will be the eleventh celebration of the festival which leaves the local streets jiving away for five days.

Headlining the festival will be Jacqui Dankworth who is appearing as part of her Live to Love tour with her band, including her husband Charlie Wood who headlined the previous year.

The theme of the festival is set to be “Aberjazz Moves” and the music chosen for the event reflects this mood. Dance workshops have been organised through Arts Care Gofal Celf and include swing hop, tap and jazz. There will also be a salsa dance workshop taught by Julia Morris of Whisky Business and a performance by Cuban dance band Fiesta Resistance.

Continuing the line-up we will see blues giants King Pleasure and the Biscuit Boys, The Brownfield Byrne Hot Six and Swingology combine with some jazz funk from Cut the Funk. Also featuring will be The Hexmen and Alabama group Debbie Bond and the Tru Dats. Carrying on the international flavour, the festival will also welcome Irish singer/songwriter Eleanor McEvoy, and The Tango Jazz Quartet, hailing all the way from Argentina.

Aberjazz President Nik Turner will also be stepping onto the stage with his band Space Fusion.

During the weekend the festival ‘hub’ will be Peppers Cafe. Other venues include The Phoenix Centre in Goodwick, TS Skirmisher, Fishguard Yacht Club, Ffwrn and Theatr Gwaun. Booking for many of the venues, and particularly Peppers Cafe, is highly recommended.
