THREE children were rescued by RNLI lifeguards from rough seas at Newgale beach on Tuesday (August 26).

The lifeguards spotted three children, aged between eight and 12 years-old, struggling to stay afloat after being caught in a rip when boogie boarding at around 1.30pm.

The lifeguards quickly launched the inshore rescue boat travelling through large swells, even getting thrown into the water themselves, to reach the children.

Their high level of training and equipment allowed them to reach the children and pull them out of the water before returning them to shore.

St Davids all-weather lifeboat and Little and Broad Haven RNLI inshore lifeboat also launched to assist in the rescue because of the challenging conditions, but both lifeboat crews were stood down shortly after and returned to station.

Back on shore the children and the lifeguards were checked over by paramedics and one child was taken to hospital for further treatment.

RNLI Lifeguard manager Philip Davies said: “This was a challenging rescue for all involved but as a result of the high level of training and equipment provided to the lifeguards three children were rescued and everyone returned safely to shore.

“Large swells are forecasted over the next couple of weeks so please take care when visiting the coast. Our top advice would be to visit a lifeguarded beach and always swim between the red and yellow flags, this is the area that’s monitored by the lifeguard team throughout the day. If you’re unsure of anything please ask one of the lifeguards – they are always more than happy to help.”

RNLI lifeguards provide a daily safety cover on Pembrokeshire beaches from 10am to 6pm throughout the summer until Sunday, September 7.
