CHILDREN with autism are being given the chance to experience the world of surfing.

A new initiative, Wales' first surf experience day for youngsters with the condition was held at Tenby's South Beach.

Eleven children were selected from Pembrokeshire to attend the day and enjoy numerous surf-based activities.

The event was organised by Angelo Fecci and a team of volunteers from Tenby’s Surf Lifesaving Club, and sponsored by Oakwood theme park.

The volunteers worked on a one-to-one basis with the children throughout the day, supervising activities and teaching basic surf-safety messages.

“The transition from trying to get the children into the water to them not wanting to leave was phenomenal,” said Angelo after the event.

“All the team was extremely touched by the achievements of these children and are looking forward to offering this experience year-on-year."

The main aim of Splash Out is to help the children taking part to develop skills needed for building relationships and trust while feeling calmer - traits that many children with autism find difficult in everyday life.

Oakwood’s head of marketing, Clare Stansfield, said: “We think this is a fantastic new initiative and would like to congratulate Angelo and his wonderful team of volunteers for creating such an exciting and fun event for these children.

“We’re delighted this year’s inaugural Splash Out day went so well and are looking forward to many more in the years to come."

Splash Out will return in 2015 and anyone interested in supporting it or getting involved can find out more by visiting Splash Out – Surf Experience on Facebook or email fecciangelo@hotmail.co.uk.
