A FORMER Premier League star who earned tens of thousands pounds a week has signed for his local village team - and will have to pay £3 a week for the privilege of playing.

Simon Davies, the former Wales skipper, put pen to paper at Solva AFC’s home game on Saturday, having made a cameo appearance for the club during a friendly last summer.

The 34 year-old previously played for Peterborough United,Tottenham Hotspur, Everton and Fulham and won 58 caps for Wales.

He captained Wales during their 2010 World Cup qualifiers before announcing his international retirement the following August.

The midfielder, worth around £4 million in his prime, will now have to pay £3 subs like everyone else on match day, and take his turn in washing the kit.

And rather than trips to Anfield to play Liverpool and Old Trafford to take on Manchester United, Simon will be facing the rather more low key journeys to Prendergast Villa and Milford Athletic.

The talented midfielder, who scored a goal in Fulham's remarkable run to the Europa League final v Atletico Madrid in 2010, will line up for Solva with his younger brother Chris, the team's goalkeeper and captain.

Simon told the Western Telegraph: “I’m looking forward to playing a few games with my brother and the friends I started playing with all those years ago.”

Club secretary Tracey Cole said: “It’s a big signing for the club.

“I’ve already told him I’m not paying him; he’s going to have to pay subs like everyone else.

“He watched the boys play on Saturday, had a few laughs and went out with them down The Ship afterwards.

“He seems keen and hopefully he’ll be available for a few matches.”

Tracey added: “His brother Chris has already told him that he expects to see him at training.”

Solva kicked off their division two campaign earlier this month and will be looking to extend their unbeaten run, with the help of their new signing, at Carew this Saturday.
