A HOUSE in Pembroke has been devastated by fire, while a neighbouring property suffered severe damage.

The blaze broke out at 12 Green Meadow Avenue at around noon today (Friday).

The council-owned property is rented by Alan Jackson, 61, and his 25-year-old stepson, Sean.

The pair were enjoying a day out in Tenby when the fire started.

Tracey and Mark Bowen, who live next door at number 10 with their children, were also not at home.

The only injury connected to the fire was suffered by a female neighbour, who cut her arm on glass when she smashed a window to try and gain access to Mr Jackson’s blazing home.

However, his Staffordshire Bull Terrier and female ginger cat are currently missing.

“I haven’t been inside to have a look yet,” said Mr Jackson, clearly in a state of shock.

“I have no idea what caused it. The dog was old. She wouldn’t have stood a chance. The cat might have escaped.”

An onlooker described Sean as having been “completely distraught”.

The Bowens have recently spent “thousands of pounds” doing their house up.

“It’s heartbreaking. We have been working on it for months,” said Tracey.

“Our roof is only a couple of years old, so are the solar panels we installed. The kids’ bedrooms have only just been wallpapered and carpeted, and they are smoke damaged. Our windows have smashed because of the heat.

"Our solar panels are wrecked. Our satellite dish has disappeared – it’s completely melted. I think the Fire Brigade got here in the nick of time, otherwise our house would have been gone too.”

Speaking from the scene, Watch Manager at Pembroke Dock Fire Station Graham Callan said the cause of the fire was currently unknown, but investigations were underway.

“The fire was well established when we arrived,” he said.

“It had spread very quickly. A wooden shed at the back of the property has been completely destroyed, as has the living room of the house. The entire house has sustained severe smoke damage.

“I’d like to remind people we offer free home fire safety checks, which you can request by visiting www.freesmokealarm.co.uk or by calling 0800 1691234.”

Two fire engines from Pembroke Dock and two from Milford Haven attended the blaze.

Around 18 fire crew members – many of whom had to using breathing apparatus - were present.

When the Western Telegraph arrived on the scene, the crew were still hosing down warm patches on the building to prevent the fire from re-igniting.
