ANGRY drivers inundated Pembrokeshire County Council's Facebook page on Saturday after freezing temperatures caused ice rink-like roads and multiple accidents.

The council admitted that it had been caught by surprise by the freeze.

Emergency services were called to string of crashes, including a single vehicle crash on the A487 Haverfordwest-Newgale road at 7.20am, and another at Allensbank corner near Narberth at 8.30am.

Police and ambulance crew were called shortly after 9am to the B4318 Sageston to Tenby Road and another half an hour later.

Later, police were called to a two vehicle collision on St Daniels Hill at the junction with Orange Way in Pembroke.

A woman was treated for minor injuries by ambulance crew following a one vehicle crash at Lamphey shortly before 10am.

Police and Firefighters from Narberth and Haverfordwest were called to an overturned vehicle on the roadway near Robeston Wathen’s Bush Inn just after 10.30 that morning.

Angry residents took to the county council’s Facebook page to hit out at the council’s failure to grit many of the county’s roads.

A spokesman for Pembrokeshire County Council said: “Unfortunately our specialist weather forecaster did not predict the icy conditions that occurred in some parts of the south-east of Pembrokeshire on Saturday morning.

“Ice formation had been predicted in the north-eastern part of the county (where gritting took place overnight) but not in any other areas.

“Our out-of-hours duty officer responded to the localised problems of ice formation as soon as they were reported.

“The problems on the A4075 (between Canaston Bridge and Carew) were reported at around 9.30am hours on Saturday by which time three gritters had been mobilised.

“The main problems appear to have been mainly concentrated in the area encompassing a triangle between Narberth, Tenby and Pembroke.”
