A FAMILY from Stackpole has been left heartbroken after their puppy died of suspected poisoning.

Wayne Edge and his son were walking nine month-old springer spaniel Alfie around Bosherston Lakes last Tuesday (February 17).

Wayne’s son noticed that Alfie had eaten what he thought were sausages, but by the time he could inspect them, they were all gone.

Later that evening the family watched in horror as Alfie transformed from a bouncy, energetic pup into a sick little dog.

Wayne said: “Throughout the evening and morning Alfie had a few accidents. That’s when we noticed something was wrong, as he is house trained.

“Over the next few hours he started getting lethargic and just wanted to sleep. His urine was also starting to turn red.”

The vets were called and they advised, based on the symptoms, that Alfie had eaten something poisonous.

Alfie’s condition continued to deteriorate, until he could no longer stand. He eventually passed away 30 hours after the incident.

“It was absolutely horrific seeing such a full of life puppy decreased to such a horrible state,” said Wayne.

“We were all very upset as he was part of our family.”

The National Trust at Stackpole has been alerted to the situation and has posted a warning to dog owners on its Facebook page, urging vigilance. The post has since been shared by members of the public almost 600 times.

Anyone who sees anything suspicious in the area should get in touch with the reception team or email Stackpole@nationaltrust.org.uk.

Wayne added: “We wouldn't like this to happen to any other dogs and families.”
