Goodwick Brass Band has once again secured itself a place in the National Championships of Great Britain, after a stunning performance at the Welsh regional brass band championships last weekend.

The band delivered an outstanding interpretation of A London Overture by Philip Sparke and was awarded the title of First Section runners up.

The band took home two best instrumentalist trophies at the competition at Brangwyn Hall, Swansea.

Principal cornet player Luke Jenkins won the First Section title, while his brother Matthew, Goodwick's First Section conductor, dusted off his euphonium to help out the newly-formed Phoenix Brass in the Fourth Section competition. He took home the trophy for best instrumentalist in this section.

The band was pipped for top place by former Championship performers City of Cardiff. However coming runner up meant they took home £200 and will be promoted to Championship level in competitions during the coming year.

They will appear in the National Championships Cheltenham in September, their sixth successive appearance in the competition.

Adjudicator Glyn Williams was full of praise for Goodwick's performance, highlighting their style, accuracy and execution of the composer's work. He said that Luke Jenkins' playing added "a touch of class".

"This was a well-rehearsed performance especially by the solo cornet player who shone like a star," said Mr.Williams.

Celebrating a brilliant weekend for Goodwick, Matthew Jenkins said:

"It was another reward for the band's hard work and attention to detail. I was delighted for Luke who played beautifully and it was great to be part of the Phoenix Brass effort which will give them all valuable experience."
