SWING music filled the air at Haverfordwest Castle on Saturday, as part of a special event to mark 70 years since the end of the Second World War.

The ‘tea party’ event was organised to mark the anniversary of VE Day when, on May 8, 1945, Nazi Germany formally surrendered to the Allies.

Dressed in 1940s-style outfits, dancers from Pembrokeshire Jive and Lindy provided entertainment, accompanied by hits from the era, and visitors also got to see an army scout car up close.

The winners of a competition inviting local schoolchildren to design a poster remembering the original VE Day celebrations were also announced.

Mayor of Haverfordwest, Cllr Roy Thomas, presented Lucy Goodyear Williams of Johnston school with £50 for her winning entry, and Evie Roberts of Broad Haven School with vouchers with £25.

Individual winners from all the schools who entered were also treated to free snacks on the day.

The tea party marked the end of Cllr Thomas’ year in office, before he hands over to Cllr Sue Murray this week.

“This has been a good end to a good year, I couldn’t have asked for anything more,” he said.

“The castle grounds really lend themselves to occasions such as this, we need to use them more.”

County councillor David Bryan, who organised the event, said it was important to mark the 70th anniversary, as this may be one of last opportunities for those who remember the war to pass on their memories to next generation.
