A grandmother who celebrated her 64th birthday by setting off on a 150 mile fundraising walk from Cardigan has returned home triumphant, completing 168 miles and raising more than £900 for ME research.

Gwyn Hopkins suffered from Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) for five years. She was told she would never completely recuperate from the condition.

However by the end of 2003 she had made a total recovery which she attributes to complementary therapies, detoxifying her lifestyle and family support.

In the past nine years she has walked over 1,000 miles to raise funds for research and to generate awareness of ME.

On June 10 she set off from Cardigan Castle with a 14kg rucksack and camping gear with the aim of walking around 150 miles to Llangollen.

Her 11 day journey has taken her fundraising distance over the 1,000 mile threshold. She hopes to raise a total of £1,000 for the charity ME Research UK.

"It is definitely the last long distance walk I'll do, unless someone offers to support me and go ahead with tent and supplies," said Gwyn.

"The stretch to Lake Bala was by far the best and hardest day; the views were spectacular. It was very hard going, not only with the climb but hard on the feet and ankles because of the stony ground. Every step was worth it, it was one of the best walks I've ever done.

"When asked why I do it, I say because I can and it's a joy to feel well and be out in nature again after spending years in bed. If I can help or inspire ME sufferers at the same time, that's great."
