A Pembrokeshire RNLI crew raced to rescue a father and daughter after their 24ft catamaran capsized in Fishguard Bay yesterday (Thursday).

The Fishguard RNLI crew was alerted to the incident by a crewmember aboard the Stena Europe ferry who witnessed the capsize while the ferry was in port.

The inshore lifeboat, with three volunteer crew, launched at 2.30pm and quickly headed to the catamaran Solent Swift, which by now was upside down, about one and half miles east of the end of the northern breakwater.

The two crew, father and daughter, were extracted from the water uninjured and a tow was set but with the boat upturned, the lifeboat struggled to make progress.

A local fishing boat came to their assistance and took over the tow back to a mooring in Fishguard harbour.

Meanwhile the inshore lifeboat took the two crew back to the warmth of the lifeboat station arriving back at 3.30pm.

The lifting barge 'Megan M' rendered further assistance by taking the catamaran alongside the quay and lifting it safely ashore.

The owner of the catamaran, said: "Everyone involved in our recovery have been great and I would like to thank the RNLI guys and the crews of the other boats who helped us recover my boat.

"Everyone has been very kind"
