Motorists parking on Lowertown Quay are being warned to tidy up their act, after careless parking has caused problems at the harbour.

Rumours that parking on the quay is being restricted to loading or unloading have not been confirmed by Pembrokeshire County Council.

However a spokesman for the authority said that recent problems with careless parking have blocked access to slipways and prevented vehicles from turning around at the end of the quay wall.

“This is a nuisance to all and would hamper emergency services responding to a marine incident,” said the spokesman. “This has led the council to consider how it might alleviate the situation to the benefit of all harbour users.”

The council initially plans to improve signage on the quay, informing users of the need to park considerately.

However if this does not work more stringent measures may be looked at.

“If this does not result in an improvement, then the council will consider what other measures are required to ensure the quay and slipways are able to operate properly for road and harbour users,” said the spokesman.

The council confirmed that the part of the quay concerned is not public highway and is owned by the council.

When asked if there was a parking order in place for the quay, the spokesman said that the authority, as both the landowner and the harbour authority, has the relevant powers to control parking on the quay.
