Firefighters rescued six people from a new lift which broke down in Tenby on Sunday evening.

The glass-sided lift, at the entrance to Tenby’s multi-storey car park on Upper Park Road, suffered a mechanical failure shortly after 8pm while the six people were inside.

Tenby firefighters were quickly on the scene to free the people, and the lift was back in service by Monday morning.

The lift was recently installed at the car park by Pembrokeshire County Council as part of a £1.3m ‘transport hub’ project for Tenby.

The scheme, which has been put in place over the last three years, includes new passenger waiting facilities and bus stops, upgrades to the multi-storey car park and footways, a new Customer Information Centre and upgraded public toilets.

A county council spokesman told the Western Telegraph on Monday: “There was a mechanical issue with the lift which has now been resolved.”
