Inspirational sportsman Gareth Scotcher has successfully spearheaded a 1000-mile pedal power challenge.

Now in the 12th year of his battle against Motor Neurone Disease, 45-year-old Gareth was joined by a trio of endurance sportsmen for a 12-hour turbo trainer marathon in Tenby’s Tudor Square on Saturday.

He and Nicky Rees, Matthew Evans and Steve Rogers aimed to cover a combined distance of 810 miles - the equivalent of riding from Lands End to John O’Groats - during the day. But with extra effort and the help of local triathletes and cyclists who climbed aboard an addidtional turbo trainer, more than 1,000 miles was clocked up.

Last year, Gareth pedalled 250 miles in five days, and in 2013, in tandem with Nicky, completed the Long Course Weekend.

But Saturday, where he completed 125 miles, was his toughest challenge to date, he said afterwards.

“I was a bit stiff on Sunday, but it was well worth it - you've got to challenge yourself," he added. “A big thanks to everyone who turned up to support us or generously donated, no final total yet but should be well over £3,000.”

“It was a brilliant day and Gareth was excellent,” said Nicky. “The aim was to raise money and awareness for the Motor Neurone Disease Association and the Paul Sartori Foundation, and the support and interest from people was really heartwarming.

“We were also very pleased to be given bacon butties from Greggs, pizza from Café Llyw and drinks from the Qube.”

On September 13, Nicky, Matthew and Steve will be taking part in Ironman Wales, and the trio - along with Dafydd Lewis, recently completed Marathon des Sables - a 240km race in the Sahara desert.
