The first preliminary model of a planned statue commemorating Pembroke’s most famous son is to be unveiled today, Saturday, October 3.

A statue of Henry VII in Pembroke has long been an aspiration in the town, and last November, members of the town council agreed to site a model of the founder of the Tudor dynasty in the town.

Henry VII was born at Pembroke Castle in 1457.

A committee of town councillors has been formed to lead the project forward and a small “maquette” statue has been commissioned.

A public consultation is to be held to put forward ideas on how the statue will ultimately appear.

Pembroke & Monkton Local History Society, which works closely with the town council in the running of Pembroke Museum, will be holding an event, Pembroke and the Tudors, in Pembroke Town Hall at 10.30am today.

Sculptor Harriet Addyman has made a preliminary statue model as a discussion point and will take on board ideas during the session for the maquette, an exact scale model of the actual statue.

The town council will be organising a public fundraising appeal to raise much of the money needed.
