Three fundraisers, three mountains and 36 hours. This was the challenge recently completed by Josie Coggins, Fred Luckman and Indigo Matthews to raise money for refugees in Wales.

The trio successfully climbed the three peaks of Snowdon, Cadair Idris and Carn Ingli on the weekend of September 26th – 27th.

They are hoping to raise £500 to support respite care visits to west Wales for the hundreds of refugees currently in Swansea and Cardiff, many of whom are living in difficult circumstances or are homeless.

"Like many people we have been horrified by the refugee situation for many months but the heart breaking image of three-year-old Syrian refugee, Aylan Kurdi, washed up on the beach shocked us," said Josie.

"We wanted to do something really positive and proactive to raise awareness to the situation.

"For us the three peaks symbolically represent the three challenges of the refugees - the loss of their home, the ordeal of the journey towards the unknown and then the challenge of finding somewhere to live.

"We can't begin to imagine what that situation must be like but we can, as fellow humans, try and do something that could make a difference."

She added that although the three peaks challenge was physically tough at times it was nothing compared to the real challenges the refugees face.

"It is a symbolic gesture about our aims and intentions," she said.

The trio have helped set up the West Wales Hiraeth Fund to help create short respite breaks for refugees. They will then work towards helping fund permanent placements in the community.

The group is arranging two more fundraising events next month. On Saturday, October 10 at 2pm there will be a beach vigil with a sand circle created by sand artist Marc Treanor.

On Friday, October 16 there will be a Hiraeth Hope event at Newport Memorial Hall. The evening starts at 5.30 and will feature songs from Ellie Fountain, Syrian storytelling by Millie Jackdaw and music from The Hat Collective, Baked Goods and Joe Caswell.

Tickets cost £5 for adults, £2 for children and include a vegetarian Middle Eastern meal from International Eats.
