COMMUNITY organisations could be left to pick up the bill for bedding plants and flowers this year.
At a recent meeting, representatives from town and community councils were informed by Pembrokeshire County Council that no new planting is being planned over the next 12 months due to financial cutbacks.
The Mayor of St Davids, Cllr Frank John was particularly upset that no new daffodils were going to be planted in St Davids.
He said: “St David's Day is a very special event and the daffodil is the national flower of Wales.
“If they told us beforehand, that would have been something.
“We resolved at a recent city council meeting that we would put the daffodils in ourselves this year, and hopefully in the summer we can get the whole community involved in gardening projects.”
The issue also came up at Fishguard and Goodwick Town Council.
The Mayor, Cllr Richard Grosvenor said it was a shame as the Golden Mile “looked great last year.”
“The short term emergency is the daffodil planting,” he said.
“I’ve done some following up and the 2,000 bulbs we need cost £130. We have been told if the town council buys them, the council will plant them.”
All councillors agreed this was an acceptable deal.
