Fishguard Sports AFC's new pitch has been provided with much-needed protection against the elements thanks to Pembrokeshire College students and Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority.

The club's chairman contacted National park range, Richard Vaughan, to ask for help to shelter the new pitch at Tregroes Park from prevailing winds.

The students, who are currently completing their Public Services course at the college, planted trees and bushes around the pitch. They used the project as the community work element of their course.

"This corner of Wales is hit by strong winds at times so we hope the planting work will mean the club won't have to pay the penalty of missing too many fixtures in the future due to stormy weather," said Richard.

"Not only has this project enabled the students to experience the kind of work the National Park Authority does with local community groups, they will also be able to watch the trees grow over time and see the difference their contribution has made in years to come,"he added.

"The trees will also help to improve biodiversity and encourage wildlife to visit the area."

Fishguard AFC Chairman, Owen Duggan thanked the hard working students and ranger.

"When the trees and bushes mature they will help shelter our new pitch from any strong winds," he added.
