COLOURFUL characters are expected to flock to north Pembrokeshire this month, as Newport hosts Wales' first celebration of town criers.

Town criers and mayors from across Wales and England will be welcomed to the unique event on Saturday, May 14, and will take part in a procession through the streets before 'The Big Shout' takes place.

Newport's town crier Mike Mathias will be joined by his peers for two shouts in the garden grounds at Market Street, below the castle, with music from Goodwick Brass Band and a local male voice choir.

Town criers are expected from Llandovery, Ilfracombe, Cheltenham Spa, Frome, Crewkerne and Seaton, Trowbridge, Montgomery, Pembroke, Royal Wootten Bassett, Milford Haven and Haverfordwest.

The event has been organised by members of the town's Court Leet, supported by Refreshing North Pembrokeshire.

Local businesses have also shown their support and a street market will also be held on the day.

Newport mayor Andrew Benham said: "This Mayoral Celebration of Town Criers brings to the historic market town of Newport a festival that reflects not only the traditions of the town, but also it's commitment to tourism that is such an important part of our rural economy."

Two shouts will take place, the first will allow each of the criers to introduce themselves, and the second will be on a given topic: "Newport, the jewel in the crown of Pembrokeshire."

Town criers, mayors and other local dignitaries are expected to parade through the streets from 1.15pm led by the Court Leet Mace Bearer, before the main event.
