Morriston Olympic 1-2 Goodwick United

It was a glorious night for Goodwick United and Pembrokeshire football as goals from Johnny Horgan and Rhys Dalling gave the Phoenix Boys an historic 2-1 win over Morriston Olympic at the Liberty Stadium last night.

Nigel Delaney's men led 1-0 at the break through Horgan's early lob, and Dalling doubled the advantage in the second half with a sharp finish when clean through.

Morriston fought back through a Rhys Page-Walker strike, but despite some tense moments, Goodwick held on to add the West Wales Intermediate Cup to the Senior Cup they won back in April.

Conditions were near perfect for football, and it was Delaney's men who threatened first when Chris O'Sullivan and then Johnny Horgan made ground down the left, but on both occasions, their crosses were cut out by Morriston centre back Craig Lloyd.

However, nine minutes in, the Pembrokeshire side were gifted an early lead as Horgan latched onto Adam Raymond's long ball over the top, and Morriston keeper Greg Evans rushed from his line only to leave himself stranded as Horgan lobbed home from out wide.

And for the 15 minutes that followed Goodwick appeared comfortable, with the only real threat from the Swansea side coming when Page-Walker floated in a free kick that drifted onto the top of the net.

But as the Phoenix Boys dropped their intensity slightly, Morriston suddenly got a foothold and striker Jordan Jones beat Scott Delaney on the right and whipped in a low cross that Goodwick right back Anthony Couzens cleared for a corner.

From the subsequent delivery, Goodwick keeper James Gwilt failed to gather cleanly and after a scramble in the area, Page-Walker rifled a goal-bound shot that cannoned to safety off Kieran O'Brien.

Kieran Hayes then curled a shot over for Morriston from the edge of the area before Adam Palmer latched onto a Kieran Hayes flick on and fired across the face of goal.

And in the final moments before the break, both sides went perilously close to scoring.

Goodwick midfielder Rob Morgans teed up O'Brien, whose stabbed shot crept under Evans - but the keeper managed to recover his fumble before the ball crossed the line.

At the other end, a Page-Walker free kick was met by Palmer, whose header from point blank range was brilliantly tipped over by Gwilt.

Nigel Delaney's side then started the second period well as O'Sullivan curled a 35-yard free kick straight at Evans, before driving another long range shot narrowly over the bar.

But it was then that Morriston had their best spell of the match as Hayes set up striker Kristian Lacy, who had replaced an injured Jones before the break, and his scrambled shot appeared to be trickling in when Gwilt recovered to claw the ball away.

Hayes then shot straight at Gwilt from 15 yards out, before wasting a much better chance went he went clean through in the area but side footed a tame effort which the keeper was able to gather.

However, then on 65 minutes came a decisive moment as Goodwick doubled their lead with a swift counter attack.

Striker Dalling, who had been denied moments earlier by a superb tackle from Lloyd, gathered a Morgans through ball and one-on-one with Evans, slotted a left foot shot high into the net.

The Swansea side reacted by bringing on winger Christopher Fisher for Alex McKinney, and he made an instant impact, cutting into the area and unleashing a curling left foot effort that Gwilt parried away.

And on 68 minutes, Morriston were back in it as Fisher set up Lacy, who shot was saved by Gwilt, but Page-Walker tapped in the rebound.

The Swansea side then inevitably pressed but the Goodwick back four of Stefan Hayes, Couzens, Delaney and skipper Wayne O'Sullivan stood firm, and the Phoenix Boys so nearly sealed it with another counter attack as Dalling's angled volley whistled inches past the post.

The tension was obvious in the final stages, and Gwilt did well to smother a Page-Walker shot from Fisher's free kick delivery.

Another Fisher delivery was headed wide by Hayes, but in the final moments Goodwick kept their composure as Dalling wasted precious seconds by the corner flag with the ball at his feet.

And then as Goodwick fans sang their club song, referee David Morgan blew the final whistle to set off big celebrations amongst players and supporters.

Skipper Wayne O'Sullivan then lifted the trophy to rapturous cheers and applause from those who had made the trip.

"It's an outstanding achievement from this team. I knew we had a strong side this season but I could not have expected this," boss Delaney told Telegraph Sport shortly after the final whistle.

"We knew they were a good footballing side because we had been to watch them.

"But we defended brilliantly and hit them on the break. And crucially, we took our chances and it's about putting the ball in the net.

"The players have been superb and I couldn't have asked for anymore from them - and the treble (Senior Cup, West Wales Cup and Division One title) is still on."

Delaney added he felt this was his best achievement as a player or manager.

Also delighted was club stalwart Brian Morris, who on behalf of the club thanked all the supporters from Goodwick United and Pembrokeshire as a whole, and the Western Telegraph and Pembrokeshire Sport media groups, for their support on the night and throughout the season.

The Goodwick players and coaches then returned to The Grand Hotel, Swansea, to celebrate their success - before their attentions turn back to the title race and Johnston at Phoenix Park on Friday.
