Strumble Head is proving itself as one of the best places in Britain to see cetaceans from the land, after three different species were spotted in just sixty minutes.

Early last Sunday morning Sea Trust volunteer, photographer Ken Barnett, had an epic early morning shift at Strumble Head, recording and photographing harbour porpoise, Risso’s dolphins and bottlenose dolphins in the space of an hour.

“Strumble Head must be among the three top places to see cetaceans in the UK with harbour porpoise seen on a daily basis all year round,” said Sea Trust founder, Cliff Benson.

“The Risso's dolphins which had been reported earlier in the week are something of a Strumble specialty having been recorded here in every month of the year.

“But the Bottlenose were a surprise as, even though they are common in Cardigan Bay just a few miles north, they are very rarely seen off Strumble.

After local kayakers reported another sighting of Risso’s just a couple of miles from Strumble on Monday, Cliff headed down to the lookout and was rewarded with a pod of half a dozen Risso’s “giving an incredible show” in the waters below.

“They have been around for several days and may be feeding on squid,” said Cliff. “Let’s hope they hang around a bit longer, They are big awe-inspiring animals, a rare sight not usually seen from the land.”
