Police have named a 15 year-old pupil who died following an incident at Pembroke School on Monday.

A police spokesman said: "Police can confirm that the male who tragically died in Pembroke on Monday, 16th May, has been formally identified as 15 year old Luke Barzewicz-Dower.”

Students at Pembroke School are being supported by specially trained staff following Luke's death.

The headteacher of Pembroke School, Frank Ciccotti, said that all pupils and staff were greatly saddened to learn of the death of the Year 10 pupil.

“He was a well-regarded student who had many close friends” said Mr Ciccotti.

“He had a gentle character, polite and respectful, and was intelligent and articulate with the potential to achieve well. We will miss him very much.”

“Our sincere condolences go out to his friends and family. He is very much in our thoughts.”

Mr Ciccotti went on: “We have experienced support workers and counsellors available to talk to those who are most troubled, and we are very grateful for the support of the police, local authority and local churches in providing assistance.

“We are also trying to help students and staff begin to cope with their loss through a series of special assemblies.

“The school is co-operating with the Coroner and his officers in their investigation into the circumstances of this tragic event.

“It would not be appropriate for us to make any further comment at this time.”

Yesterday police said they have begun to investigate the circumstances of Luke's death.

A police spokesman said: "Pembrokeshire Police have commenced enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of a 15 year-old male which occurred today near Pembroke School.

"Next of kin have been advised and are being supported by a Family Liaison Officer.

"H.M Coroner has been advised.

"School Community Police Officers are working with the school to ensure the wellbeing of the rest of the pupils.”

Earlier on Monday Pembrokeshire County Council said the pupil had been taken to hospital following a serious incident near the school.

"Pupils who have been upset by the incident are being offered support," the council added.

The school remained open.

It is understood the incident happened in woods near the school.

A Dyfed-Powys Police car was seen parked at the school and Police Community Support Officers were walking the school grounds.

Two police cars were also stationed in a field south of the school.
