Tickets to the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series event at Pembrokeshire's Blue Lagoon, sold out just one hour after going on sale yesterday (Wednesday).

The 5,000 tickets were picked up in record-breaking time with queues out the door at local retailers in Pembrokeshire.

Both land and water spectator tickets were sold in a fraction of the time of the previous Red Bull Cliff Diving events, with the 2014 event selling out in 12 hours.

The action begins on Saturday 10th September with the main event on Sunday 11th September.

The 2016 Welsh event also welcomes female competitors for the first time.

In the 14 men and 8 female-strong divers line-up, are two British athletes, five-time overall winner Gary Hunt, and former Olympian Blake Aldridge.

In Wales Blake and Gary will be joined by British Wildcard Mat Cowen for one event only to compete with a much valued home advantage, as thousands are expected to turn out in support.

Crowds will line the cliffs and water around the Blue Lagoon to watch the world’s best divers push their body and mind as they reach speeds of up to 85kph during 3 seconds of freefall.

Ahead of female divers competing in the UK for the first time, one of the competitors Rachelle Simpson commented:“Red Bull makes huge efforts to select some of the most stunning cliff diving locations in the world for its series and their decision to bring women to the UK for the first time is a real compliment to the Pembrokshire setting.

"Now we have almost the same amount of competitions as the men I think it will help people see that women are the real deal and not just an exhibition. It also gives us women the chance to cliff dive more and with more cliff diving comes more experience and a higher level of diving.”
