The end of an educational era in Tenby has been marked this afternoon (Friday) as one of its best-loved buildings closed its doors for the last time.

Tenby VC Infants School in Heywood Lane has been at the heart of the community for over 60 years, but is now due to be demolished as part of a near £8.4million schools shake-up for the area.

Pupils, parents and staff past and present gathered outside the school after the bell rang for the final time for an historic photograph, three cheers and just a few tears.

Said head teacher Gill John: “It’s so sad for the school, because it is such a wonderfully warm school.

“But it is now the time to look forward to a great new future for education in Tenby.

“I’ve had 19 very happy years here, and it been a privilege and a great honour to be head teacher of such a marvellous school.”

Two new schools will be opening in Heywood Lane in September - the new build Tenby Church in Wales VC Primary School and the Welsh medium Ysgol Hafan y Mor, which will be housed in the current Tenby Junior School.

The infants school is to be demolished, with the land used to create a grassed sports pitch.
