Plans are afoot to transform Fishguard's empty Abergwaun Hotel into a mixed use premises comprising a pub, hotel, craft shop and two flats.

A planning application for the disused venue on Fishguard Square has been submitted to Pembrokeshire County Council by Clevedon based company Union Pension Trustees Ltd.

Architects firm Richard Andrews says the vision for the hotel is to rejuvenate the building.

The application says that the owners of the 18th century building are keen to "respect and enhance" the character of Fishguard Square through renovating the vacant hotel.

"The principle idea is to split the existing hotel into smaller more manageable chunks," reads the supporting document.

"The restaurant will become slightly smaller and take the form of a gourmet restaurant, the number of hotel rooms will be reduced and a holiday let flat introduced which is more in line with modern holidaying habits with larger groups.

There will be a craft shop off the covered walkway and a manager's flat on the top floor of the building.

The application states that ideally renovation of the building will happen imminently. It reads:

"It is important that the building is revitalised as soon as possible, in order for it to be an active part of the town and contribute to the vibrancy of Market Square."
