FIVE members of staff from a Haverfordwest beauty salon are preparing to run the Cardiff half marathon under the instruction of Wales rugby legend Gareth Thomas.

As part of the television series Gareth Thomas: Alfie’s Angels, which airs tonight on BBC One Wales, the former Wales captain is coaching 100 runners to complete the 13-mile race on October 2.

The women from ProNails Wales were chosen earlier in the year to take part in the grueling challenege and get themselves in shape through a strict training programme.

“We never in a milion years thought we’d get picked,” said Lisa Williams, “but we began in June and started training straight away.”

The group of five have found running routes in the area and try to train together four times a week.

“Before we started, most of use couldn’t even run for a minute,” said Lisa, who thinks the hardest part is keeping yourself motivated.

As part of the programme, the women have been given training tips as well as expert dietary advice.

“We have had a lot of support to change our lifestyle, instead of the party lifestyle we’re used to,” said Charlotte Reyland.

“Every time we meet up with the other angels is great. And Gareth is amazing; he gets involved in every step.

"After the marathon we’re going to have a knees up which we’re looking forward to.”

While the team have enjoyed the training and being on the programme, they have set themselves an impressive fundraising target.

“We’re very keen on fundraising for the local community,” said Lisa. “We’re hoping to raise around £70,000 for the Princes Gate Trust and Riding for the Disabled.”

The first episode airs tonight on BBC One Wales from 7.30pm.
