They say never forget your roots - and Team GB 7s star Jasmine Joyce certainly followed that notion when she returned to Ysgol Dewi Sant Secondary School for a special assembly.

The 20-year-old is a former pupil at the School, and shot to stardom this summer after becoming the first ever Welsh rugby player to appear in the Olympic Games.

She has made no secret of her gratitude to Ysgol Dewi Sant and in particular, former PE teacher Rachael Thomas, for encouraging her to fulfil her sporting ambitions as a youngster.

And on Thursday, Headteacher David Haynes introduced her to current pupils and staff members, and spoke of his pride at watching her perform in Rio.

Then after a short video was shown celebrating her recent achievements, Mr Haynes conducted an interview with Jasmine on stage, and asked her about her experiences at the Olympics, her feelings after scoring that now famous try against Brazil, and what advice she'd give for any current pupils wanting to fulfill their potential in sport.

Jasmine then took questions from excited pupils, and re-iterated her desire to appear in the next Olympics in Tokyo in 2020, as well as the Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast, Australia, in 2018.

To round off the assembly, Jasmine was presented with a golden YDS pen, water bottle, and boot bag - which Mr Haynes joked he wanted to see her using on television.

"It has been fantastic to have her back today and we are all very proud of her," said Mr Haynes afterwards.

"She's an inspiration to all of us."
