Cardigan Fire Station has raised over £4,000 for Newport tot Eliza Donnelly, after walking in full fire kit from Newport to Cardigan.

Eliza was diagnosed with stage 4 Neuroblastoma in July. This is a rare cancer of specialised nerve cells, diagnosed in less than a 100 children a year in the UK.

She needed life-saving emergency chemotherapy as her organs started to fail and spent most of the summer in Noah's Ark Children's Hospital where she underwent intensive chemotherapy and now faces exhaustive stem cell treatment in Great Ormond Street and Cardiff.

Her family is raising funds to supplement her treatment with a number of natural therapies and a trip to a specialist clinic in Germany to rebuild Eliza's battered immune system.

Last month crews from Cardigan Fire and Rescue Station tackled the 12.5 mile walk from Newport to Cardigan, wearing full fire kit, to raise money for the two-year-old.

They had a welcome break along the route at an Eglwyswrw coffee morning, which was also in aid of Eliza.

There the crews were provided with tea and cake to help sustain them on their journey, while the children and their parents received a surprise visit from Fireman Sam.

The walk has proved to be a huge success thanks to the generous donations and sponsorship from the community. Around £4,000 has been raised so far with more to come and donations still being taken. As soon as the total figure is collected, firefighters will present a check to Eliza's family

"Taking part in a sponsored walk is not something that the watch normally undertakes," said Cardigan watch manager John Mitchell.

"However, due to the close link between Eliza's parents and the crew, we were very keen to do something to help raise money towards the treatment needed."

Ceredigion Community safety watch manager, Nicola Thomas added:

"Thank you to everyone who supported the sponsored walk.

"The encouragement and generosity shown by drivers and pedestrians that donated along the way was amazing."
