Coastguards have now stood down as Police continue their efforts to search for a woman who is believed to have gone into the River Teifi in Cardigan yesterday (Sunday) afternoon.

A major search operation was launched at 1.15pm yesterday, after emergency services were called to Cardigan Bridge.

Yesterday an intensive and thorough search of the area was carried out after reports of a person in the water.

Cardigan, Moylegrove, Gwbert Coastguard rescue teams, Cardigan RNLI inshore lifeboats, Dyfed-Powys Police and the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service were involved.

They were joined by the HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter based at Caernarfon.

Teams were stood down at 4.30pm because of fading light.

We understand the search has now expanded to cover other parts of the river, up to Newcastle Emlyn.

The Coastguard has now stood down but police are continuing their search efforts until the lights fade.

They then intend to resume the search tomorrow.

Dyfed-Powys Police Chief Inspector Peter Roderick said: “Dyfed-Powys Police are investigating and conducting local enquiries to verify the identity of the female, they are also in liaison with other police forces who have been asked to check their missing person reports.

"The Dyfed-Powys Police Marine Unit is also fully engaged in the search activity.

"Any person with information to assist with this enquiry is asked to contact Dyfed-Powys Police on 101.”
