A HAVERFORDWEST publican has been recognised in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list with a British Empire Medal.

For nearly 50 years, Brian Harries has supported charities across Pembrokeshire, helping to raise thousands of pounds through his philanthropic work.

Brian, who runs the Bristol Trader pub, said it was an honour to be recognised.

“It came as a complete surprise; I’m thrilled,” he said.

Originally from St Davids, Brian started his charity work when he joined the Young Farmers aged 16.

He is now an active member of the Haverfordwest Rotary Club and Haverfordwest Round Table. He’s also on the committee of Pembrokeshire Cystic Fibrosis Society and chairman of Pembrokeshire Friends of Prostate Cymru.

Down the years he has presented dozens of charity auctions, which are estimated to have raised more than £500,000 for charity.

Brian, 65, was also on the after-dinner speaker circuit and has been involved in smaller community initiatives including being the sole adult actor in the Solva pantomime.

“Through my charity work I’ve met so many people,” he said. “I now have friends all over the county because of that."

Modest about his achievements, Brian said being self-employed makes it a lot easier to fit in so many extra commitments.

“I also have the most amazing wife - Margaret - who is so supportive,” he said.

John Daniels, trustee of Pembrokeshire Friends of Prostate Cymru, praised Brain’s charity efforts.

He said: “Brian has been a tireless and highly respected fundraiser for over 40 years for many organisations, particularly as an auctioneer at countless charity events both within the county and throughout south Wales.

“More recently, he has been heavily involved in raising money for Prostate Cymru and is currently the chairman of its Pembrokeshire Friends which has raised over £140,000 over the last three years.”

Brian will be presented with the BEM by the Lord Lieutenant of Dyfed before attending a garden party later in the year.

His hard work will continue in 2018 as he becomes president of Pembrokeshire County Show.

He said: “I’m not one for daytime television and have no plans to retire any time soon.”
