HUNDREDS of people visited Brithdir Mawr community country fair on Saturday, enjoying music, workshops, storytelling, fantastic food and a chance to experience the unique community.

The community, near Newport, was established in 1994 by Julian and Emma Orbach. The current community rents the farm building and around 80 acres of pasture and woodland from Julian, who plans to sell it in 2020.

At present 15 adults and five children live at Brithdir Mawr living off grid, farming according to organic principles and working towards sustainability.

The farm also runs perma-culture courses in conjunction with the University of Bristol and hosts WWOOFers from around the world.

The community needs to raise 500,000 in order to buy Julian’s share the farm. As well as community fundraising events, it plans to build an eco-training centre which will run courses in sustainable farming and rewilding retreats.

When the centre is not being used the local community will be able to take advantage of it as a meeting place and use its kitchen for events and catering.
